Bored silly in paradise

it's 718am on my first morning in Zanzibar, and I am already bored silly.  I've found that writing is a  good way to blow off some time.  Perhaps this is what has motivated great writers throughout the ages: simple boredom.  Writing this certainly amuses me.

After safari I have to think is writing one's thoughts different from hiding behind a camera?  It's a trap into which snap-happy tourists on safari fall, not being genuinely present for the majesty and terror of untamed nature, position, focus, snap, never to go back and really look at the pics.

Ernest Hemingway would be fun to deconstruct, with such a colorful life and such great stories.  We should ask my Pultizer-prizeTM winning brother, Frank, if he is motivated mostly by boredom.  The first thing I do when I get bored is to drink myself into a stupor.  Last night I also burned a wine cork and drew on a mustache, dragged out my cheetah and echinda and posed them at dinner but also drank a lot of free cocktails.  At least I ordered them in Swahili.

Can I write a chart in this blogging software?  I shall improvise with spaces..

Writer              Credentials        Lived abroad?   Drinks way too much?  Gambles?   Obessed with travel and languages?   Chases women (or men)?  Obsessed with South Florida?   Places self in harms way on travels for fun?
Hemingway     Old Man and Sea          Yes      Yes                    No              Yes      No          Key West       Yes, chased down bulls
F Main             Pulitzer story on crime   No       Yes                    No             Yes      No           Key West       Yes, chased down gangs
R Main             Crummy travel blog       Yes      Yes, this trip      No              Yes     Yes          Miami Beach
Yes, chased down Canadian boy in Cape Town

I guess that is enough analysis to see that we are all different, and I am still bored. I still think we're driven by boredom, though.

Taking pics of bees swarming the honey at brekkie

My Swiss-clockwork methodical personality wants to make something productive of this day in paradise.  It will make me feel better and avoid drinking before noon if I come up with a list.

brainstorm:

☞   Fix hard drive of IBM laptop that won't boot.  Will need Internet connection to figure it out so it might have to do by pool or in lobby.
☞   Consult with hotel to help them fix their two routers that wont work without user passwords
☞   Fish out the waterproof ipod Christmas present from Frank and wife Alice and use it on a swim

☞   Give myself weekly predicure
note Dr. Petra, broken toe recovering

☞   Give self manicure for split thumbnails from setting up new trellis on west wing of garden before my trip
Ouch!

☞   Go back through safari pics on ipad to see detail to reblog them from iphone (since the photo stream pics have reduced detail)
☞   Eat brekkie buffet
☞   Swim in ocean

☞   Swim intervals in one of the four 200m pools
☞   Watch video of me an anita doing tai chi on my ipad and write down the movements
☞   Do my daily tai chi
☞   Do yoga
☞   Look around for a gym for weights, else use theraband
☞   Read my Athens guide
☞   Read my St Pete guide
☞   Read my moscow guide
☞   Study Swahili book and practice with Zanzibarian staff who speak the core untainted dialect
Ordered two pancakes politely in Swahili this morn

☞   Study my Russian course text
☞   Study the Greek phrase book for basics
☞   Learn to read Greek
☞   Record the animals on safari i saw each day, with wikipedia links
Worn out and annotated guide now

☞   Have a Dawa (slang for booze, means medicine in Swahili)
☞   Chase up Elaine and Mick and plan adventure
☞   Walk down beach to aquarium on tip of island

Now, let's prioritize the top ten in order of execution:
Give self pedicure
Shower
Swim in ocean
Do five tai chi movements
Eat brekkie and study swahili
Practice Swahili with locals
Record animals from safari on ipad in Quick Office (since laptop wont boot) while brekkie digests
Swim intervals in 200m pool with ipod on shuffle
Take beach walk and explore
Send Elaine a note to come by to play cards this arvo

That's ten.  Now the day is out of my hands, and I have a Swiss schedule to follow.  That will likely get my to about 1pm when i shall have to do again including lunch.
